IMPERIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY EXPANSION

The
Imperial Public Library will be expanding and has
hired an architect from North Platte.
Why
does the library need an expansion?
Vicky
Heskett, former library board member, explains: "We
need more shelving space, taller shelving for
taller books, more patron seating, tables and
chairs to spread out paperwork, work area for
staff to repair and clean books, more display
areas, more space for computer stations,
etc."
Because
of this lack of space and the need to meet ADA
requirements (making the building accessible to
all), the Board discussed an expansion
project.
How will an expansion be funded?
The
library has applied for several grants and has received several donations from community members. Also,
the S.O.S. (Showing Our Support) Book Club is doing well. A library patron signs up to buy a
book for the library, then is allowed to check
out the book first before donating it to the
library. Find out more details at the library.
What has been proposed so far?
In the
spring of 1997, Imperial community members
served on a committee that looked into the
possibility of a joint school-city library
facility. After research into the feasibility of
such a plan, a town hall meeting was held. A
written opinion poll was taken at this meeting,
and the results showed that those in attendance
preferred an expansion at the library's present
site.
Community
members mentioned many ideas on how to
create the accessibility that ADA requires. Some
of these suggestions included the addition of a
ramp or elevator, westward expansion to the
existing building, changing the floor level,
relocation to another site, and hauling in dirt
then paving it over to form a raised parking lot
in the back of the current or expanded building.
How can a person find out more?
The board states, "The public is
always welcome to sit in on any committee
meeting, as well as our monthly Board
meetings."
Anyone
with input and ideas should attend. Meeting dates
and times are posted at the library. It is not
too late to take part.
