Mike at Night
Although we're currently in the "dog days" of summer with hundred degree days following hundred degree days for what seems like forever, the end is, in fact, in sight. The school supplies are appearing in stores across the country and, for many of us, we will be re-engaged in the educational process in just a couple of short weeks. With that in mind, I would like to present my end of the summer concert listings for our immediate area, hoping that you will avail yourselves of the opportunity to "party down" one more time before the cold winds begin to blow.Denver has some awesome acts appearing in the next couple of weeks. Since I gave a complete listing of groups appearing in Denver at the beginning of summer, I only want to highlight a few of the big names that will be in town this month. This Monday, August 6th at Red Rocks Amphitheater will feature John Mellencamp. On Wednesday, August 8th, Stevie Nicks will perform at Fiddler's Green. Of course, the highlight of the summer entertainment will be the formal opening of the New Mile High Stadium in Denver with The Eagles on Saturday, August 11th This should be an absolutely can't miss performance and if you already have tickets, you're one of the lucky ones. If you're not able to get a ticket for the Eagles, you could always head on down to the Ogden Theatre and catch the Allman Brothers Band, also on appearing on Saturday, August 11th. Finally, Chuck Berry and Gary Puckett will appear at Fiddler's Green on Saturday, August 18th.In Nebraska, Chris Ledoux will be performing at the Chase County Fair in Imperial on Friday, August 17th. The following night, Saturday, August 18th, Blessid Union of Soul and Eve 6 will be appearing at the same venue. Coming to Lincoln in the upcoming weeks will be Poison at the Nebraska State Fair on August 24, Brooks and Dunn at the Nebraska State Fair the following night, Saturday, August 25th, and then Engelbert Humperdinck at the same venue on Tuesday, August 28th. Two country stars, Mel Tillis on Thursday, August 30th, and Chris LeDoux on Friday August 31st, and the rock band Kansas on Sun, September 2nd, will close out the fair. Soulcracker will appear at Royal Grove on Tuesday, September 25th and finally for Lincoln, looking far down the road, Glen Campbell will perform at the Lied Center on November 29th.In Omaha, 2 Live Crew will be at the Music Box tonight (Saturday, August 4). David Lee Roth will be doing his thing at Levi Carter Park on Saturday, August 18th, as will Quiet Riot, at a location to be announced at a later date. Ratt will appear at the Music Box on Friday, September 21st with Soulcracker following on Wednesday, September 26th. The Fabulous Thunderbirds will appear at the same venue, on Friday, September 28, followed by Sir Mix-A-Lot on Saturday, October 13th. Omaha will close out the fall concert dates with two huge names. Neil Diamond will perform two nights in a row at the Omaha Civic Auditorium on Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th. He will be followed at the same venue by Juice Newton on Thursday, November 15th.Finally, a venue that I haven't mentioned before but one that is rapidly gaining a reputation for drawing some of the biggest names in music is the Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, Kansas, just outside of Kansas City, Missouri. There will be a great twin bill there on Friday, August 10th featuring Chicago and The Doobie Brothers. The "Doobies" continue to be one of the most outstanding live performances out there and it's always a treat to watch them do their thing. The following night, Saturday August 11th features another double bill, Godsmack and the Deftones, also appearing at Sandstone. On Wednesday, August 15th, James Taylor will be appearing. On Saturday, August 25th, there will be a triple bill, opened by Will Hoge, followed by The Wallflowers and headlined by John Mellencamp. On Wednesday, August 29th, Stevie Nicks will be in town and Saturday, September 1, 3 Doors Down will be there.. Finally, Matchbox Twenty will perform at Sandstone on Sunday, September 16th.The winds will be howling and the temperature will be dropping before you know it. I hope you can use this calendar of upcoming events to plan a trip and let your hair down one more time before we're all driven back inside. Some of us will be at Sandstone on Friday the 10th to catch Chicago and The Doobie Brothers. Maybe we'll see you there. In the meantime, Party Down.
